History and a Sense of Humor: Belgium

Every two years the Belgian village of Theux turns the calendar back to
the year 1500 for an epic Medieval Festival. Over 2,000 volunteer actors
flood the 11th century castle of Franchimont where they mingle with
thousands of visitors like us, costumed from head to toe. As we strolled
the hilly ruins enjoying the castle’s namesake brew, we literally
brushed up against all walks of life: hairy-moled witches handing out
candy, wise old falconers, hearty metalsmiths, artistic nuns, chanting
monks, fighting swordsmen, hooded executioners, feisty treasoners,
pussing lepers begging for food and processions of nobility weaving
through the courtyard with armored horses and stuffed boar’s heads.

The detailed ambiance and interactive performances were remarkable, humorous,
and haunting all at the same time.
